RE: New shocks

I have Bilsteins and love them. I also have Ranchos and like them alot too. Both are very good shocks. The Bilsteins are the better buy for the money. I got the Ranchos for the rear axle because of the adjustable feature.

RE: Who says you need a big truck to tow?

When my old dually had broken down with a snapped timing chain with the 11' camper on it, a friend with a little Nissan or Toyota truck pulled me home, on a chain. This was back in the days when Nissans and Toyotas were truely mini trucks. He didn't think the little truck could do it, but it did. I knew it would.

Well that's too bad. 'I guess that's the way of it at a time like this' (last words spoken by John Astor aboard the Titanic as it was about to go under, if memory serves me correctly).

RE: Super Single Tire update

Jefe, I haven't begun the axle search yet. Still saving up the $$ and still haven't fixed the body from the last time the truck was hit (hit and run driver). Then this morning, I was greeted by broken glass next to the truck. Somebody broke into it last night, tried to gank the stereo, but gave up after prying on it and got my tool box intead. This was on my birthday, no less :(. Wonderful b-day present! LOL Fortunately they didn't get into the utility body.
Thanks for the ideas on the S-series axles. I wonder what the bolt circle diameter is of the Kodiak 8-lug axle. My truck is 8 on 6.5". That was the attraction to the Dodge version of the Dana 80, same bolt circle as my front axle. Also the width attraction of the DRW Dodge D80 pickup axle would make it possible for me to run duals in 285 size with custom wheels and no spacers.
At any rate, the S-series axle, though tempting, is a bit of overkill for my truck. The D80 should be plenty. The only drawback is the 4.56/4.63 gear ratio issue but I think it will be ok, or I suppose I could swap both axles to 4.88. There are probly more differential choices available for the model 80 axle than the S-series too. I'll definitely want a locker.

RE: TC's for a 9' truck bed?

SoCalDesertRider, that's the rub. My Lance has the holding tanks hanging down at 100" from the front of the bottom of the camper. That works fine in an 8' bed but won't in a 9" (108") bed. A spacer will work and that'll shift the center of gravity back by 8" also. Not a big deal but it would be nice to have some more space back there.
Brian :)Brian, have you thought of spacing the camper UP instead of BACK ? Build a frame under it to space the front up high enough that the tanks will sit above the bed, then it can be loaded all the way forward with no space behind the cab ?

RE: Rear end gears

I would leave the axle gearing alone and instead add in a Gear Vendors overdrive unit. It bolts onto the end of the transmission (if 2wd) or transfer case (if 4wd). It is a mini automatic transmission with two gear ratios: direct 1:1 and overdrive 0.8:1. Doing the math, .8 x 4.88 = 3.90.
With the Gear Vendors, you have 2 trucks in one, a heavy puller with 4.88's when the OD unit is in direct gear and a freeway cruiser with 3.90's when the OD unit is overdrive gear. :)
Check them out- Gear Vendors

RE: Dana 60 gears

I would do 4.56 with that V10 and oversize tires.
I have 4.56 in my Dana 60 front axle. No unusual gear whine. My front axle is a high-pinion Dana 60 that uses reverse-cut gears.
I was very surprised (and disappointed) to find no full-floating wheel hubs on our '05 E350 diesel cargo van's Dana 60 8-lug rear axle. :(

RE: TC's for a 9' truck bed?

If the camper floor is flat from front to back, I don't see where it matters what length the bed floor is. Now if the camper has stuff hanging down below floor level in the rear, that would cause a problem. My Vacationeer had the tanks hanging down in the rear and I had to remove the step bumper from my Chevy to be able to load the camper all the way forward in the truck bed. That same camper fit fine without removing the bumper on my friend's F250.

RE: Super Single Tire update

Matthew B's F350 is a '94-'97 dually. It uses the Visteon 10.25" DRW axle, which is line 2 on the chart, 8250 lbs. Ford's rating is 7500 lbs, the limit of the springs. My F350 is a '92 SRW, it uses the Visteon 10.25" SRW, line 1 on the chart, 6250 lbs. Ford's rating is 6084 lbs, the limit of the stock 235/85-16 tires.
Visteon is no longer making the axles for Ford. Ford is making them themselves again in the Sterling axle plant, which is why all the axle information disappeared from Visteon's website.
Dana 80 (true Dana 80, not 70/80 hybrid) = 11,000 lbs, according to Dana.

RE: Eye opener pt 2

I kept mine on the truck for camping trips, but I did camp in it in the yard and had it supported under the floor by screw-up trailer leveling jacks with 4x6's laid accross them. Very stable, and my usual camper parking spot was very uneven, both side to side and front to back.

RE: Super Single Tire update

How are they on price?
15.5" wide, now that is very cool! :)
I'm running 285/75-16E BFG AT KO's (3750 lbs @ 80 psi) now on Stockton 16x8 welded steel wheels (4000 lbs @ 100 psi rated). The BFG's are 11.25" wide and 33" tall. Cost was about $200 per tire, if I remember right.
The BFG AT's are very quiet and ride nice, wear even, have good traction in everything except clay mud. Too bad they don't offer them in the MT open-lug mud tread. With the Lock-Right differential in the rear, 4.56 gears and so much weight on the back axle, with these tires I go most places in 2wd.

A length of 1" x 1/8" flat steel, a few tools and a welder and you can make your own for next to nothin. :)

RE: Gear Change 1997 GMC Yukon

Contact Precision Gear, Richmond Gear, Reider Racing, or Randy's Ring & Pinion. You should be able to find a 4.56 gear set for your axles. 4.56 is available for most truck axles. Dig deeper than what the sales staff are telling you. Those gears are out there.
I changed my F350 from 3.55 to 4.56 and I absolutely love it! :) Your results may vary.

RE: Big 3 rear axle #'s

All of those axles are fine for their pickup truck applications. You're not going to be able to load more weight in the truck than those axles are rated for. The lightest axle mentioned is the Visteon 10.50" used in the Fords, which is rated 9750 lbs. You'd have to be loading well over 6000 lbs of cargo in the bed to overload that axle. Not likely to happen in a truck with a pickup bed on it. My truck is carrying 3500 lbs of equipment in the bed. I don't see where I could possibly have enough room in there to stuff another 3000 lbs in it.

RE: F350 or F450

Dana S-110, the axle itself is rated 13,500 lbs by Dana, has been for several years now. Ford rates the rear end of the truck for all the components of the truck, so Ford's rating will often be different than that of the axle manufacturer. The Dana 80 is rated 11,000 by Dana, even though Ford may only rate the truck for 9,350, or whatever the number is.
An example is my truck, Visteon rates the axle for 6250, Ford rates the rear of the truck for 6084. The limiting factor is the tires. Ford rates the dually version of my truck for 7500, while Visteon rates that axle for 8250. The limiting factor is the springs.
When I talked about Dana 80's in F450's, I was talking about F450 chassis/cabs over the years '99 to present. Many F450's over the years have had Dana 80's in them, and many have had Dana S-110's in them too.
